Virtual Dentistry Work Experience for A-Level Students

This course aims to provide students with the essential insight into Dentistry, with topic-focused sessions designed outline the foundations of practice, interactive workshops to explore Dentistry in action and comprehensive interview guidance.

Sessions providing an insight into the daily life of a dentist, day 1 of the virtual work experience course is designed to introduce students to the dental clinic and how it operates, from the multidisciplinary team to the larger scale administrative, legal and financial structure. Day 1 will also introduce students to the different branches of the dental profession, highlighting its diverse nature.

Day 2 is focused on patient ethics, which have recently become increasingly relevant as the dental profession shifts from the paternalistic outlook to the patient centered approach. These sessions will cover essential knowledge in autonomy, consent and confidentiality; the cornerstones of medical ethics.

Day 3 will involve sessions introducing students to the regulating bodies and how they govern Dentistry today. Students will gain an insight into the organizations that protect patients and dentists alike, as well as guide dental professionals and set standards for practice. This will feed into the representation of Dentistry in the media and public eye. Students will finally learn how dentists should reflect these standards through their professional behavior and empathy.

The final day provides students with the opportunity to consolidate collected knowledge and apply the concepts they have learned on two different case studies; allowing them to observe and reflect on Dentistry in practice using real-life cases. Interview advice will also give students an insight into a fundamental yet notoriously difficult aspect of the dental application process. This will prepare students for coming interviews, in which use of case studies are common and an important reflection of the students’ understanding of core concepts in Dentistry.
